Tadafumi Kato was appointed as the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine/Department of Psychiatry, Juntendo University School of Medicine, on April 1/2020.

Juntendo University is the oldest medical school in Japan, funded in 1838. The Department of Psychiatry of Juntendo University is probably the largest department of psychiatry in Japan, having 49 faculties including 6 professors and 11 associate professors in 6 university hospitals. Juntendo University has started comprehensive collaboration agreement with RIKEN in 2012, and in this context, Tadafumi Kato was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Juntendo University in 2018.

In Juntendo University, the laboratory continues to study neurobiological basis of bipolar disorder. Combining data-driven research by comprehensive analysis and hypothesis-driven approach, the laboratory will conduct research that can integrate basic science and clinical medicine by analyzing patients’ genome, postmortem brain, etc. The laboratory will use all available cutting-edge technologies to achieve the goal. Elucidation of the cause of bipolar disorder will also lead to elucidation of the neural basis of emotion.
